  • Interactive Historical Maps, conceived of by Dr. Edward C. Papenfuse, programmed by Thomas Boutell, and supported by a grant to the Maryland State Archives from the U.S. Department of Education, provide the researcher with the ability to examine data related to slavery and the Underground Railroad in a new way. These maps will enable the user to plot graphically runaway slaves, Underground Railroad sites, plantations, etc. Users will also be able to click on names and locations to bring up additional information.

In time all Maryland Counties will be represented. To determine which counties are currently in the system search on the word "County" below (or "City" for Baltimore). NOTE: the maps are best viewed with Internet Explorer or Opera. Netscape is not recommended.

Enter the place name or individual's name you wish to search for.

    Example: Prince George's County
