  • The beginning of the Beneath the Underground Project was undertaken largely thanks to a grant from the National Park Service (NPS). In response to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act of 1998, NPS developed a program that supports a wide variety of activities, including research initiatives such as the one under consideration.Called "the Network to Freedom," NPS promotes, encourages, and oversees historical investigation of the ways in which enslaved Americans fled bondage. In May 2001, the Maryland State Archives was designated a Network to Freedom Program Research Facility status.
